Sober Extension
Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 19, 2026
Short version: Sober Extension does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. Everything it tracks stays on your own device, inside your browser's local storage.
1. What the extension does
Sober Extension is a browser extension that lets you track how many days have passed since you last visited a website in a category you define (for example, adult content, gambling, or social media sites), celebrate streak milestones, and optionally block those sites from loading.
2. What data is stored, and where
The extension stores the following information, entirely inside your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local):
- The categories and domain lists you create or edit (e.g. "Gambling" → bet365.com, stake.com)
- The timestamp of the last time a page matching one of those domains was loaded in your browser
- Your longest recorded streak per category, and which streak milestones you've already reached
- Whether you've turned blocking on or off for each category
This data never leaves your device. There is no backend server, no account system, and no analytics or telemetry of any kind built into the extension.
3. What the extension does not do
- It does not record or store your general browsing history — only whether a page matched a domain you explicitly listed, and when.
- It does not transmit any data to the developer, to Google, or to any third party.
- It does not use cookies, fingerprinting, or any tracking technology.
- It does not sell, rent, or share user data with anyone, under any circumstances.
- It does not display ads.
4. Permissions used, and why
- storage — to save your categories and streak data locally on your device.
- webNavigation and host permissions — to detect, locally in your browser, when a page you've navigated to matches one of the domains you've listed, so the relevant streak can reset. This check happens entirely on-device; no URL or browsing data is sent anywhere.
- declarativeNetRequest — to redirect blocked domains to the extension's own block page, when you've turned blocking on for a category. This also runs entirely on-device.
- alarms — to periodically check, locally, whether you've crossed a streak milestone (1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year).
- notifications — to show you a congratulatory notification when you reach a milestone.
5. Third-party services
The extension's interface loads typefaces from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com). This is a standard web font request and does not include any personal or browsing data — only a request for font files, subject to Google's own privacy policy. No other third-party service is contacted by the extension.
6. Data deletion
You can delete all data stored by the extension at any time by removing the extension from your browser (via your browser's extensions page), or by clearing individual categories from the extension's settings page.
7. Children's privacy
Sober Extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, since it does not collect information at all beyond what is described above and stored locally.
8. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same page with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the extension after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
